Beginning Blues Guitar

So you want to learn to play blues guitar. Where do you start? Well, the first thing you need to do is find out what you need to know and what you should practice. If you are a complete beginner then you need to start with the blues basics. This is the stuff that you need to know regardless of the kind of things you prefer. If you don't understand the fundamentals then you will always be one step behind whenever you are being shown something, or watching a lesson on Youtube.

Once you know the basics, you'll need to learn at least a few of the common blues chord progressions, and of course how to play the chords if you can't already do so. As long as you can play pretty basic chords and rhythms then you are ready to jump straight in to learning to solo, this is where most people struggle the most with blues guitar. We'll get to that later and try to demystify most of the common confusions that crop up with learning to play blues solos.

Although blues guitar has become very diverse, the basics remain unchanged. Unfortunately the basics often get skipped over because it all sounds boring and we just want to get on and learn some cool licks and riffs. This is a big mistake that should be avoided. Start slow, learn in stages and practice properly is a guaranteed way to get there quicker.
